Programs and traps: exactly why matchmaking apps need to do additional to guard LGBTQ communities
Relationships apps have revolutionized the way we date, hook-up, and find like. But, unfortunately it’s never fun and games. In some countries programs have also used to damage LGBTQ communities. In a current report, post 19 investigated how well-known matchmaking programs are utilized by LGBTQ people in Egypt, Lebanon and Iran, while the danger they deliver from regulators and non-state stars. Joining up with Grindr and other online dating apps, we considered means app providers can—and should—adapt their own products to higher protect against their unique misuse to surveil, misuse, and arrest consumers. Real legal rights organizations, technologists and providers must collaborate to mitigate the possibility of individual liberties violations committed via technologies— as there are nevertheless a long way to go.
